FACE No. 58

I chose this man because of his glasses low on his nose.  Profiles are difficult for me, but this one seemed to paint itself.  I love it when that happens!

LINDA "GOLDIE" NICKLES

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Week 14 features Linda “Goldie” Nickles...All that glitters is not always gold.  Goldie is as notorious as the rest of the gang.  We believe she has a hideout on the island but authorities have not been able to locate the area she resides in nor apprehend her.  Beware because she is a seasoned traveler and can assimilate herself into any environment...she is no less devious than the rest of the gang despite her petite stature and innocent look...she will shoot first and ask questions later.  If you have been shot check local galleries for your likeness.  If you are visiting Hilton Head be especially cautious...she has been known to walk among the visitors and shoot using her silencer...

CATHY "THE TRAVELER" ENGBERG

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Cathy  “The Traveler” Engberg was first seen in Chicago shooting and Wreaking havoc in popular tourist sites.  Wherever there was a crowd Cathy would stealthily make her way into the venue and begin shooting.  Millennium Park is still recovering from her visit.  She then was seen with the Hilton Head Gang.  It isn’t known whether the rest of the gang was in Chicago also or if she travels alone.  What is known is that she is armed and dangerous.  Shots will be fired...paintings will be rendered.  Check out local galleries for her artwork.  Don’t approach her without backup.

DAWN - AGAIN!

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
I felt I just needed to re-do Dawn's mug.  I'm happier with this one.
On another note, the other day I was at Linda Reedy's studio and she had this quote posted and I LOVE it and thought I would share!
"I want to be the kind of woman who when she wakes up in the morning and puts her feet on the ground the devil says .....
OH CRAP, SHE'S UP!"
Have a great weekend!!

If you are not familiar with Terry Miura's work, please take a look at his blog.  He has posted a very interesting challenge with some great tips on painting and simplifying a cityscape.  I did two paintings.  Both were really fun and I learned a great deal.  If you are up for another challenge this one is a really good one!

STRIPED TIE

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
To bid on this painting click HERE.
I had to google "why do men wear ties?"  The top answer:

The same reason women wear pantyhose. No one knows....we just do it because society expects it from us when we need to look nice.
Sounds as good a reason as any!

Another mug shot.  I was drawn to her because she wasn't looking at the camera, but in a different direction.  In addition, I liked her thick hair.  It was fun to paint.

BRA 3

I think this will be my final bra painting, at least for the time being.  So many other things to paint and I'm satisfied with my exploration of this subject for now.

DAWN "THE SHADOW" HARTIGAN

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
Dawn “The Shadow” Hartigan is so named because she is deceptively quiet. She sneaks in with an unassuming look and an unsuspecting public can expect to be exposed.  Shots will be fired in rapid succession and before you know it “The Shadow” has moved to her next victim.  Paintings will be painted, shown in galleries, and bought by people you don’t even know.  You could actually be hanging in someone else’s home without your knowledge.  You won’t even know...only “The Shadow” knows...

As always, check out Dawn’s blog at
for more information about her whereabouts and her artwork.

BRA

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
To bid on this painting click HERE.
This month's challenge for Some Texas Artists Like to Paint is "BRA."  I submitted the challenge and I'm happy that it was chosen.  It is a different still life that most artists paint and that is one reason I thought it would be a good subject.  In addition to that reason, I chose this topic because back in June or July when we were asked to submit challenge topics my daughter-in-law had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Bras were on my mind!  By the way, she has completed chemo and breast reconstruction and is doing great!

MAGGIE - AGAIN!

I would like to introduce you to Maggie .... once again.  I first introduced her in 2010, the first year I began my blog.  I painted this from a photograph I took of her when she was a puppy.   She is my very sweet and incredibly intelligent King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and my buddy.  My studio would not be complete without Maggie sleeping on her soft dog bed.  I'm afraid she's not much an art critic.  She just loves everything I paint (if only she had a PayPal account!).  I hope you have someone that is as good a companion as Maggie is to me!

FACE No. 55

This was a lot of fun to paint.  I did a cadmium red underpainting and you can see bits and pieces of that underpainting peeking through.  I tried to put down one stroke and leave it (not always successful!) and keep it loose.  In addition I used a palette knife for the background.  I love painting these mug shots.  Each one is a learning experience.

TERRI "BONES" BUCHHOLZ

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

.   The trail is still hot...so we shall continue on.  We are determined to feature one member each week until they are all accounted for.

Terri Buchholz “Bones” is a nurse and uses her position to gain unsuspecting victim’s confidence.  As soon as she sees you are vulnerable she swoops in and reveals herself as an expert in the field...she shoots and then disappears into the crowd.  She can see a victim a mile away...authorities believe she has a telephoto lens that gives her access to otherwise unavailable victims.  Be on the lookout...she too...is armed and dangerous!
For more information about her possible whereabouts check out her blog:
Information can also be found on the Hilton Head Gang Blog...
The above post was skillfully written by Maria Hock, who by the way
is 60 today, just in case you haven't heard!!

A LESSON ON PATIENCE

These two photographs are of the same painting I completed and posted on January 30th.  The photo on the left was taken inside my studio because it was cloudy outside and prohibited a good photograph.  Yesterday I decided to re-take the photo and I was surprised to see a dramatic difference in the two.  I replaced the old photo with the new one in my post.  What a good learning experience!  My impatience with getting my painting posted on my blog must now be tempered!  Patience!  Not my best trait!

"Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering you own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them - every day begin the task anew."
Saint Francis de Sales
 .

Have a wonderful week-end ..... and be patient there will
be a fantastic Monday soon!

HOLY COW! FOR KAY WYNE

Kay's moleskin theme is "HOLY COW!" and I painted a few cow studies for practice and in one word they were pitiful!  So, in keeping with her theme (sort of!), I decided to paint something associated with cows.  Cows produce wonderful milk, and from cream, butter.  YUM!  For Kay, two plates of butter with a silver butter knife waiting to spread this treat on a slice of bread.

BUTTER 2

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
To bid on this painting click HERE.
I continue to like painting these simple shapes and the silver knife.  These small studies are a great way to learn to see only what is necessary and limit the number of strokes ... and they are fun!
HAPPY FRIDAY!!

BUTTER

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

I wanted to do a still life and butter and a butter knife seemed like a good subject to do a little study.  I enjoyed painting the simple shapes, which is always a good exercise.

WHEELIN' IN HILTON HEAD

6x6 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

I thought it would be fun to do a Daily Paintworks challenge for a change of pace.  This week's challenge is "The Wheel Challenge" suggested by Carol Carmichael.  A photograph I took while in Hilton Head at Karin Jurick's workshop was just the ticket.  Take a few minutes and explore these three sites.  Believe me, you will not be disappointed!
