HILTON HEAD ISLAND GANG

4x4 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Here she is, Karin Jurick.  Our leader, the top dog of our Hilton Head Island Gang.  Her mug reveals her cunning, shifty appearance.  You can almost see the wheels turning in her head .... planning the next clandestine operation out into the public with cameras at the ready.  Under her cunning leadership we took our cameras and incognito hit the beaches.  No one was the wiser and every member of this wily gang got plenty of photographs from which to paint.  If you would like to be a member of this elite gang that is cloaked in secrecy and on the Q.T. can gather enormous amounts of information, check out Karin's blog and sign up for her next workshop.  You will not be disappointed  ..... although your mug may show up on the post office walls of America!

For more info on this fugitive gang check out Maria Hock's blog and Karin Jurick's blog.

FACE No. 36

6x6 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
Celeste Bergin asked me if I felt sorry for the people I am painting. I've given this a lot of thought and it isn't an easy question to answer, especially with a simple yes or no. I don't know any of these people and I make an effort not to know for what crime they have been accused and their names. Some of the mug shots were taken at time of arrest and some after they have been convicted. So, for me this is an exercise in learning. However, having said that there are times when I feel a sadness, sometimes a profound sadness, sometimes less, but always complex. It's a feeling not only for the person, but for all the people this person has touched. When a crime has been committed from the less serious to the most horrible there are consequences that ripple far beyond this one person. For me, this is a complex issue and not an easy task to compress my thoughts into a few sentences. So, I would say that feeling sorry doesn't enter the picture as much as sadness. Thanks, Celeste! it's a thought provoking question.

FACE No. 35

12x6 Oil on Panel
Well, I have to say that when I saw this mugshot I wondered what he was looking at. Was it a bug on the ceiling? An interesting light fixture? Or maybe something imaginary? He made an interesting painting and one that I may re-visit sometime.
Virginia Floyd asked me what I have learned while painting these faces. Thank you, Virginia, for your question, it made me think and attempt to put into words those specific elements. First, and I think foremost, I have gained another level of confidence. Many artists suggest painting the same subject over and over and I am learning the truth to this. I don't think it matters what subject is chosen, just something that inspires you. As I became familiar with my subject I realized that I want to be looser and freer with my brush strokes. I have learned more about the importance of temperature changes in skin tones and I have a more acute appreciation of the planes of the face which are crucial to those changes in temperature, values, color, edges and brush strokes. I could go on and on about all the elements that we encounter and discover with each painting. Bottom line is that learning continues every day and if we're lucky we have someone like Virginia to encourage those of us (like me!) who aren't adept with words and writing. So, thanks again for your question, Virginia, which helped me to think and grasp the basic components of my learning experience!

FACE No. 33

12x6 Oil on Gessoed Panel

This was fun to paint with the blue scarf on her head. You know how some paintings just paint themselves? This was one of those. The time went too fast. Of course, I have to admit that when painting, time just seems to rocket!

FACE No. 29

12x6 Oil on Panel

I like working on this format. There is more room to play with the background and to paint the entire photograph. My brush strokes are getting looser and I like that. This was one of my favorites to paint!

FACE No. 26

6x6 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

I really worked on being a little looser on this painting and I think I succeeded. I kept the edges soft where needed and a couple of accidental brushstrokes that worked. I like him!
